Abstract works: oil on board painted in the 1960s and 1970s
Billingsgate Abstract
Believed to be an abstract Billingsgate this paiting shows the development of Stan's green palette whislt still being recognisibly figurative showing the fish porters and their wares though now as quite dissolved forms
Abstract Composition (SS03)
Oil on board, 150 x 122cm - Stan experimented with some exciting pallets for his abstracts and their a handful featuring this exciting shade of pink. You can often trace a set of colours through Stan's work often starting as a figurative piece but then becaming the building blocks of something much more abstract such as this piece.
Abstract Composition (SS129)
Oil on board, 30 x 45cm - this is believed to be an abstraction on the ice blocks found in Billingsgate fish market and ties in heavily with the palette Stan used for the Plymouth Barbican picture owned by Pembroke College, Oxford
Ironman
Currently this is the only example we have of work like this by Stan showing the influence of artists like Rothko. The painting in the flesh shimmers and glowers at you from the wall. Unfortunately as with most paintings the photograph is half the story
